Activities at the Terminal’s booth connect environmental education to visitors’ daily lives; the event runs through Thursday (11)
The opening of the 19th Paranaguá Municipal Environment Week, held yesterday afternoon (8), brought together students, families, companies, and institutions at the Albertina Salmon Arena around a common goal: to encourage reflection on conscious consumption and proper waste disposal. TCP, the company that manages the Paranaguá Container Terminal, is participating in the program, which runs through next Thursday, the 11th, with interactive activities using games and group dynamics to address topics such as recycling, reuse of materials, and sustainability.
Organized by the Municipal Secretariat of Environment, Rural Development, and Fisheries (SEMMADESP), this year’s edition has the theme “Turning Waste into Resources is a Commitment to the Future.” The goal is to raise public awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal and to showcase initiatives that transform recyclable materials into opportunities for income generation, environmental preservation, and sustainable development.
At TCP’s 18-square-meter booth, children, students, and visitors can participate in an interactive wheel of fortune with questions about sustainability and an activity inspired by the Troca Solidária program, an initiative that seeks to demonstrate the value of recyclable waste and the importance of properly sorting materials. The activities were designed to present environmental concepts in a practical and accessible way for school groups and residents visiting the site.
“Participating in Environment Week is an important opportunity to connect with the community and reinforce the importance of environmental education. Children absorb knowledge in a very practical way and end up becoming advocates for sustainability at home,” says Eliane de Oliveira, TCP’s environmental coordinator.
The theme of this year’s event aligns directly with practices already adopted by the company. TCP maintains programs for the segregation, reuse, and proper disposal of waste generated in its operations, in addition to initiatives focused on energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Among these is the project to electrify yard cranes (RTGs), which replaces diesel consumption with clean electricity.
Another initiative was the completion of the Terminal’s Waste Collection Center, a facility with an area of approximately 120 square meters used to store waste in a safe and sustainable manner, ensuring that 100% of contaminated materials are sent for recycling, treatment, or reuse.
Participation in the event also allows the company to present to the public some of the key social and environmental initiatives it has developed in Paranaguá and the surrounding region. Among them are Remada Ambiental, which organizes community cleanup efforts along the Itiberê River; decentralized basic sanitation projects in schools in island communities (such as Ponta do Ubá and Piaçaguera); the planting of native trees in urban areas; and ongoing programs to monitor water, air, and biodiversity quality in Paranaguá Bay.
“Sustainability is a collective effort. The government plays an important role, companies need to do their part, and the public also plays a leading role in this process. Events like Environment Week help create this connection and show that small, everyday actions can have a positive impact on the entire city and the future of Paranaguá Bay,” concludes Eliane.
